Dunn-Edwards Launches Neutral Color Collection

Paint and coatings company Dunn-Edwards recently introduced 160 new hues as part of its New Neutral Color Collection. According to the emailed release, the collection consists of neutrals ranging from cool grays to warm browns.
“Perhaps more than ever, we’ve found that people are seeking comfort at home—which, in our world of paint and color, translates perfectly to calming neutrals,” said Sara McLean, Color Expert + Stylist at Dunn-Edwards.
“This new collection is chock-full of understated yet welcoming browns and grays that create a sense of peace and quiet. Neutrals are timeless, and this new collection gives homeowners a wide selection to ensure they find the right hue for their home, no matter its style.”
The “Warm Neutrals” palette reportedly includes 80 browns, creams and earthy neutrals to “transform any home into a designer retreat.” Inspired by nature, the collection draws from elements such as baked clays, sand, mushrooms and seeds to “bring the serenity of the outdoors inside.”
In the “Cool Neutrals” part of the collection, 80 grays and cool neutrals “create the perfect muted backdrop for a colorful life.” Inspiration from nature includes forest fog, sea foam, clouds, summer nights, icicles and “quiet moments.”

The company reports that the new collection was inspired by customer requests for more go-to neutral color options. Additionally, the hues have been added to its color system, Dunn-Edwards Perfect Palette.
Color of the Year, Design Competition
In October, Dunn-Edwards announced its 2023 Color of the Year. Described as a deep, rosy pink hue with terra-cotta undertones, Terra Rosa (DE5096) as a muse is meant to exude confidence, inspire creativity and create a sense of coziness. The company adds that the cinnamon rose hue is “strong, yet approachable, and acts as a refreshing neutral updated to browns and burgundies.”
Terra Rose is part of the company’s 2023 Color + Design Trends: Life in Poetry collection, which features 12 pastel tones that create a soft, summer-like aesthetic with nods to flowers, fruits and nature.
Other palette collections this year include Live in Joy, Liberated Nomads and Well Intentions.
In March, the company announced that submissions are open for its third annual Emergency Professionals Design Competition. The competition is open nationwide to students of architecture and design who are enrolled in school.
Through Aug. 15, students can submit their entry for commercial or residential design. According to the emailed press release, there is no fee to enter.
This year’s theme is reportedly influenced by Dunn-Edwards' 2023 Color of the Year, Terra Rosa (DE5096). Each entrant will be required to include this color, pulled from Dunn-Edwards' 2023 Color + Design Trends, in their design. They also will be required to submit a mood board and renderings.
Winners will be announced no later than Aug. 31 and will be highlighted on Dunn-Edwards' social media channels. The grand prize winner will receive a $3,000 cash prize and be featured on the company’s specs + spaces blog. Second-place and third-place winners will receive cash prices of $800 and $250, respectively. Other competition guidelines, the project brief and submission form can be found here.
