Institutional facilities have some unique characteristics to consider when selecting and specifying floor finishes. These buildings generally handle high traffic, have extended hours of operation and minimizing maintenance and renovation is an important cost consideration. In this presentation we will overview flooring performance, aesthetics and cost impact associated with specific areas in the healthcare and educational facilities. A review of the various options will include the benefits and limitations of concrete staining/dying, polished concrete, thin-film coatings, high-build resinous flooring and thin-set terrazzo. The presentation will review important specification details relevant to institutional applications. Due to the influence of the concrete substrate on the floor finish, we will discuss the specification, testing and surface preparation standards and guidelines. Finally, system installation procedures and details will be discussed to insure a problem free quality project. Participants are eligible for one AIA LU credit.
