Retailers have a variety of options for protecting and beautifying concrete floors – e.g., applying a paint system, toppings, covering it with materials such as VCT or carpet, or polishing with or without stains or dye. The selection of the materials depends on the service environment, purpose of the materials (aesthetics vs. function), maintenance expectations, and cost. This webinar describes various flooring options that are available, the advantages/disadvantages of each, maintenance requirements, and costs. Participants are eligible for one AIA LU credit.

• Recognize the pros and cons of floor coatings, coverings, and concrete polishing
• Examine the installation and maintenance costs for various floor types
• Identify floor inspection methods that are useful in determining whether coatings, coverings or polishing are appropriate for concrete floors

Presenters:
Terry Carroll, Commercial Services Group Manager KTA-Tator
Terry Carroll, P.E. is the Commercial Services Group Manager at KTA-Tator, Inc. In this position, Mr. Carroll manages the efforts of the group in performing building envelope diagnostics and providing recommendations and specifications for resolution of moisture intrusion problems. His company provides various consulting services to the commercial building industry on a nationwide basis. Mr. Carroll’s career covers nearly 40 years of engineering design, construction, and facilities management of commercial and industrial facilities in manufacturing, power, and retail industries. Prior to joining KTA, Mr. Carroll was with a large international multi-store retailer for over 20 years. There, he served in various roles including Structural Engineer and Director of Construction, Retrofits, and Facility Management providing oversight for both new and existing facilities. Mr. Carroll is a registered Professional Engineer and a licensed General Contractor. He holds a BS in Civil Engineering from NC State University and an MBA from Winthrop University. He is an active member of the National Society of Professional Engineers serving as NC state president and in many other roles at the state level. Mr. Carroll has served as a lecturer at various engineering and trade association conferences.
Kevin Brown, Commercial Services Group Technical Director KTA-Tator
Kevin Brown is the Technical Director of the Commercial Services Group for KTA. In this position, Mr. Brown develops and implements maintenance programs for commercial clients nationwide who are experiencing architectural/commercial problems related to paint failures. He has over 12 years of experience in the field of retail facility management overseeing building maintenance and preventative maintenance programs for over 1,700 stores including store repaints, floor coating replacements, and long-range budget planning. Mr. Brown has extensive knowledge of numerous protective coating systems, tooling/floor polish processes, and construction drawing building code review. He utilizes KTA’s professional staff and independent laboratory to conduct a variety of consulting services including coating failure analysis, specification development, coating condition surveys, floor polish evaluations, roof detail inspections, paint performance testing and program management. Mr. Brown holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and an MBA from Gardner-Webb University. He is a NACE Coatings Inspector Level 1, a Certified LX Tribometrist, and a Registered Roof Observer. Mr. Brown has been a featured guest speaker at various trade association conferences.
