The long-term appearance of coatings used on commercial buildings is of key importance during the design of the project. Appearance impacts brand image and many companies build their brand using specific colors. When you think of these companies, you think of a specific color, and probably a familiar logo that contains these colors. Colors are strategically selected to convey distinctiveness within the industry. However, maintaining coating aesthetic attributes such as good color and gloss retention can be a challenge in aggressive environments. The webinar discusses finish coats that are commonly used on commercial buildings when aesthetics are critical and addresses issues associated with maintaining the appearance of coatings and the impact on brand image. The use of instrumentation for determining the color and gloss of coatings in the field are also described.

Learning objectives

• Identify the typical types of finish coats used on commercial buildings
• Identify the typical instrumentation used to assess color and gloss in the field
• Recognize challenges of aggressive environments that affect color and gloss retention properties
• Identify issues associated with maintaining coating appearance on commercial buildings impacting brand image
