How do you successfully apply a chemical-resistant lining to the interior of small-diameter pipes (3 inches or less)?

Lining application on small pipe is a challenge, especially if the pipe is fabricated in different shapes. In my own experience lining pipe for 25 years, the smallest diameter to line and accomplish good job and a good Q.C is 3" With a high solids epoxy, smaller than 3' is real challenge, as is different types of materials the project designers can pick for each specific requirements.

We apply our 2-part liquid epoxy to the ID of 2 7/8" and 2 3/8" down-hole production tubing, and have done so since 1985. I believe we did some slightly smaller ID a few times, but I'm not sure what it was. Each pipe/tube is holiday detected once the coating is cured. 100% inspection!

I have used two different methods throughout the years to coat pipes with a diameter as low as 3/8" which passed holiday testing. Flow coating while rotating the pipe is one, older, method. This often requires special equipment. Another, more recent method, is the use of extended spray nozzles with a 360° spray pattern. These are custom build pieces of equipment. Although I have limited experience with these nozzles, pinhole-free finishes are reported to be achieved.

If your chemical-resistant "lining" would include an applied coating, good luck, as pinholes and thin spots are common, causing premature failure. Could a grade of stainless steel pipe handle your chemical? Could you use plastic pipe (PVC,CPVC, PVDF or plastic-lined steel pipe?
