Simple, you can notice on the control panel the amps will fluctuate on the individual blast wheel motors, indicating you need to add new shot or grit.

I look for deformation and fractured shot in samples under a 200x microscope. Periodic scanning with the microscope on blasted surfaces will start to reveal fractured shot embedded in the surface of the finished part once the shot starts to break down.
