Traditional abrasive blasting (including Sponge Blasting) can be operated in potentially explosive areas (API Recommended practice 2027). The impact spark created from abrasive blasting has been shown to be of low thermal energy so as not to create ignition, and it is wrapped with fresh air from the compressed air stream. The concern, as it is with all options, is static electricity sparks or sparks from impact of the machines, tools or nozzles. It is important to use systems that are ATEX-certified for such environments.
