Rust loves to trap contaminants; therefore, insuring removal of invisible contamination will increase the service life of the protective film.
The film of the oxide layer can be thick; therefore, achieving sufficient film thickness of the coating is necessary to sufficiently impede the electrolyte from reaching the substrate or at least all the conductive ions.
Properly applied, they can protect the metal substrate for a reasonable amount of time, with emphasis on reasonable, albeit not like the good ole suboxide of lead pigments.
