In most cases organic zinc-rich coatings are selected for the barrier properties of the resin system, with the zinc dust addition providing self-healing by sacrificial means in the event the coating is mechanically damaged. On this basis, unless significant mechanical damage is anticipated, the service life of a properly formulated lower-metallic-content zinc-rich epoxy system should not be adversely affected.
