The use of water-based chemical paint strippers/removers is more effective in removing old coatings without affecting the surface texture of the substrate. The paint stripper can be applied either by brush, roller or spray. Depending on the coating type and film thickness, the paint stripper should be allowed to dwell into the coating until the coating softens. (Visible wrinkling is often an indication that the coating is softened or detached from the surface.) The softened layer of coating can then be removed either by sponge, rag or by scraping. Application of paint strippers can be repeated until all the layers of existing old coatings are completely removed. Rinsing the treated surface with clean water is recommended to wash off residues.
