"Hybrid coating" is a termed used where two or more binder system with distinct properties and curing mechanisms are combined. Hybrid coating can be one-pack or two-pack system, depending on the curing mechanism. Most hybrid coatings are a blend of inorganic polymer and organic binders. The performance properties of hybrid coatings are dependent on the chemistry of the polymer blend, and there are different types of hybrid coatings commercially available. This type of coating also offers positive impact to environment because of its reduced VOC, reduced HAPS and long-term durability. A fluoro-silicone hybrid coating is a combination of fluorine and silicone chemistry that provides flexibility, UV resistance, durability and long lasting surface cleanability due to its oleophobic properties. A polyurethane/polyurea hybrid coating is a resin blend of amine-terminated and hydroxyl- terminated polymer resins, and its performance properties are a compromise of the properties of polyurethane and polyurea. Epoxy-polysiloxane hybrid coatings are ultra-high volume solids and low VOC, which also reduces cost by offering a possibility to reduce the number of coats in a protective coating system. It provides improved adhesion due to its excellent wetting and chemical bonding, This type of hybrid coating provides excellent abrasion resistance, excellent barrier properties, excellent chemical resistance, excellent corrosion resistance, excellent weatharability (extended gloss and color retention) and also excellent anti-graffiti and dirt repellency. Acrylic-siloxane hybrid coatings have superior weatherability and offer a cost-effective isocyanate-free alternative to an aliphatic polyurethane topcoat. It also offers long-term gloss, color and appearance retention. Phenolic-siloxane hybrid coatings offer fire resistance and improved flexibility and resistance to cracking.
