What is the best way to remove graffiti from the surface of historic stone masonry on a church while preserving the appearance properties of the substrate?

Depending on the type of graffiti medium, high pressure washing with hot water or steam cleaning can be used; otherwise, chemical cleaning using alkaline gel or paste-type graffiti remover is preferred because it does not drive the pigment or dyes in the graffiti into the substrates and then can be followed by steam cleaning. Do not use solvent because it will drive the pigments or dyes in the graffiti medium deeper into the pores of the substrates.
