Direct assessment with visual and physical testin, ...read more Direct assessment with visual and physical testin, of the coating under insulation is the way to go, but, of course, you don't want to remove 100 percent of the insulation. Plan insulation removal at areas where water that has entered the insulation system is likely to collect and may degrade the coating, such as low spots in the pipe system, bottom elbows of vertical runs, etc. Also, inspect the integrity of the insulation system. Look for damaged jacketing areas or spots not installed correctly. Remove these and the likely location where this water may collect. Another option would be to perform an infrared scan of the system to determine where temperature deviations are present and thus potential problems are and target these for insulation removal. Start here and hope you don't have to remove more insulation, but be prepared to do so. Don't forget to allow our metallurgy friends this opportunity to check the integrity of the pipe or equipment, as well. Otherwise, you may be back stripping insulation again in less than a year.
