Stainless steels can fail catastrophically due to stress corrosion cracking (SSC). The primary cause of SSC is high stress, exposure to chlorides and improper welding procedures. If stainless pipe is under high pressure and in a chloride-rich environment such as seacoast, then painting the pipe prior to insulating would be a good practice.
