Does roller nap decrease the lifespan of a three-coat OZEU (organic zinc prime coat, an epoxy intermediate coat, and a urethane finish coat) paint system? Is there a visual guide or specification for this in the industry or test results available for study?

Normally, a roller is not recommended for applying protective coating primers because the coating cannot achieve good wetting of the surface by roller application. Also, the thickness cannot be easily controlled compared to spray gun application.

Roller nap in nature has a tendency to allow the zinc to absorb and pack into the nap, creating zinc load and then no zinc load during application on the surface. Without full cathodic contact, the coating system is reliant on barrier protection, which does have a direct impact on service life of this coating system. I am not aware of any technical data or studies performed on this application process.
