Surface salts are best identified with ion-specific testing. Chloride, sulfate, and nitrate ions arrive from different sources. These soluble salts should be removed to improve adhesion and longer life span for protective coatings. Remediation of surface salts, properly identified, also minimizes ingress of corrosive salts into rebar. The measurements are directly presented as micrograms per sq cm, which corresponds to surface area.
