How do you best remove lubricants and other contaminants from field-bolted connections prior to painting?

Since the lubricant can only be removed after construction, the practical solution is to use a suitable solvent or emulsifier. Also, consider that lubricants may contain silicones, and in the case of galvanized fastenings, a further treatment with a suitable bonding coating or primer may be required. In the case of new structures, I would suggest that trials are conducted to establish the best practice prior to commencement or bid stage.
