Can lightweight block (CMU) be successfully coated to prevent water intrusion, or is it best to build with standard weight?

Of course it can be successfully coated. I'm not aware of any waterproofing material that cares about the substrate to which it's applied as long as there is sufficient adhesion for the material to achieve its intended purpose. (previous comments acknowledged).

I, too, am puzzled by the question. Is it a wall or a flat surface or a roof. Is it interior or exterior? Where is the supposed intrusion coming from, rain? Several manufacturers of lightweight block allow larger voids to achieve the lightweight look. Yes, there is a coating, but filling the voids may require several coats.

I don't understand this question. I believe it is too open-ended to provide an answer. Coated? With what - bituminous? Can it be membrane-reinforced? Coated with masonry material, then with another coating? Within a particular budget?
