On a concave surface the base of a shore hardness gauge may not lay flat due to the radius of the curvature not accommodating the gauge, especially if the gauge is used in the wrong direction. Also, the applied coating or lining may shrink during curing, which would have more of a tendency to reduce the thickness on a convex surface versus a concave surface.
