I see only little advantage in using mechanical equipment inspectors or welding inspectors in terms of their familiarity of welding defects. Most of the time, they use their instinct as inspector to spot any possible visual coating defects. The disadvantages are more by not having thorough knowledge on the coating technology, e.g., generic type of paint materials, their compatibility, interpreting the causes of coating defects, trouble shooting, uses of different type of surface preparations and paint application methods, all of which could be the an important factors in deciding and inspecting a coating application. This knowledge is usually acquired before becoming a certified coating inspector.

Craft-specific inspectors will have the necessary inspection tools and be familiar with the proper methods of coatings inspection. I see no advantage in using inspectors from unrelated disciplines.
