In addition to the previous defects I would also look out for cracks and fractures. These can sometimes be expected due the brittle nature and low tensile strength of cast iron. Depending on the scale of crack, a cold stitch repair may suffice; otherwise, the whole casting would have to be replaced.

Two of the main issues I have run into with cast iron are voids or craters in the casting and flash left from the casting process. Both make adequate coverage when painting nearly impossible. With the flash, we usually grind with a small grinder to remove it. With voids and cavities, I will fill with a good quality body filler if possible. Sometimes the only answer is many coats of paint to try to fill in the defects.
