However, all care must be taken in order not to build an over thickness on those areas once the coat may crack (as already found in some ships). Nevertheless, areas difficult to be reached by the gun spray, as scallos close to bottom plate (for instance) shall have two stripe coats.

If you see any coated wbt 10 years in service, the answer will be in front of you. howsoever well stripe coated it may be, but the tank first shows coating failures at the stress areas which are weld seams, hole edges. stripe coating due to the property of 'edge recessing' of all the liquids is a half myth (or half truth!). to apply stripe coat on "non accessible areas only" is also misleading statement. i prefer all weld lines (auto and manual alike), all holes and all free edges without any discount. i have visited my ships in service and the full stripe coat principle has only strengthened!

To be sure that all edges are covered and coated as per the specification at the correct mil thickness the edges especially those that are not easy to get at with a sprayer should be stripe coated with a brush to make sure all edges are covered with the correct film thickness. Based on the structures geometries the determination as to where striping is required needs to be made on site with the contractor applicator and the owners representative or inspector.
