When should you specify UHP waterjetting on bridges?

Selected Answers

It depends on the location of the projects. If the surroundings and the activities nearby will get distrupted by abravise blasting, then UHP will be the option for a more environmentally friendly method.

From Michael Beitzel of Modjeski & Masters inc on July 20, 2020:
You should consider UHP when you have an existing, acceptable surface profile on any structural steel base material or if you are willing to provide secondary surface profiling measures and if you have eliminated vapor abrasive blast cleaning as an alternative, also if you have determined that you cannot tolerate or accommodate the introduction of abrasives such as near movable bridge machinery, also if you are required to clean and profile bridge concrete substrates. In specialty circumstances, you may need to use UHP if you need to control the paint removal field and spare damage to the adjacent galvanized components such as a galvanized steel grid deck attached to a painted structural steel deck.  Us4e UHP when you want to selectively remove layers of an old coating system, also to significantly reduce workers lead paint exposure levels when feasible. You can use UHP when proper collection of waste water is possible. You can use it to support hydrodemolition efforts of damaged or deteriorated elements of concrete bridge structures.

From Jaime Marcos of Profesional independiente on July 20, 2020:
Cleaning with high pressure water is usually specified if cleaning cannot be carried out by abrasive blasting, due to the deterioration of other elements, or due to environmental considerations. If the paint system is fine and it is a matter of repainting, it is not necessary to blast. Applications with high and ultra-high pressure water on bridges include removal of paint, cleaning of metal and concrete surfaces, and removal of mold.
