How do I prepare an oil-stained, bare concrete floor for coating?

Selected Answers

From Daryl Duncan of Greener Blast on November 6, 2018:
Vapor blast with soda abrasive.

From Jeff Kim of Sherwin-Williams on November 2, 2018:
Decontamination of concrete surfaces requires the removal of oils, grease, wax, fatty acids and other contaminants, and may be accomplished by the use of detergent scrubbing with a heavy duty cleaner/degreaser, low pressure water cleaning (less than 5,000 psi), steam cleaning, or chemical cleaning. The success of these methods is dependent upon the depth of penetration of the contaminant; which is dependent upon the contaminant’s viscosity, the concrete’s permeability and the duration of exposure. In areas where the contaminants cannot be removed, the contaminated concrete must be removed and replaced. Once contaminants have been removed, the appropriate concrete surface profile (CSP) can be accomplished by a number of methods, tools and equipment per SSPC-SP13. The preferred CSP will be determined by the thickness and type of coating system to be installed.
