What’s the best way to protect a masonry wall from freeze/thaw cycling?

For freeze/thaw damage to occur; there must be a sufficient moisture trapped in the masonry wall or the wall must get wet and the temperature of masonry wall must cycle above and below freezing. Proper installations of effective gutters, downspouts, eaves troughs, drip edges and proper window flashing will prevent water from getting into the wall. Application of impregnating/penetrating water repellent/sealer into a clean, bare masonry wall will improve the freeze/thaw resistance of the masonry wall. Impregnating sealers are mostly based on either, silane, siloxane or a mixture of both. These types of sealers prevent the absorption of water and the resulting damage from expansion as it freezes, and at the same time they allows the masonry wall to breathe.
