What criteria of selection should be used in deciding between a liquid-applied and a sheet-applied air barrier?

Moisture can't get behind liquid-applied moisture barriers since there are no holes. This question essentially relates to "house wraps (?)" Then how does this apply with the common understanding of the physics of moisture particles?
