Your field surface preparation requires SSPC SP-10 and your field bolting uses hot-dip galvanized bolts. What surface preparation do you require/allow on and around the bolts?

From James Prevatt of SPEC-GUARD on August 26, 2016:
This is a great question and addresses the need of a thorough specification, not leaving any question to the field painter who may or may not know a best-in-class answer, as was given by Michael Beitzel above. Tighten up, specifiers, or see your galvanized connections damaged and the benefit lost.

From Michael Beitzel of Modjeski & Masters inc on August 23, 2016:
The field around the bolts are prepared to an SSPC-SP 10 and primed prior to installing bolts. The hot dip-galvanized bolts are not quenched and do not receive any passivating treatments. Solvent cleaning is required to remove green wax lubricant from the galvanized nuts and any oil on the field from air impact tools used to tighten the bolts. We have used nuts that are lubricated only on the internal threads to minimize the cleaning required. The bolts are then prepared to SSPC-SP 16. Alternatively, after solvent cleaning we have allowed use of a product that cleans and etches the galvanized bolt to provide a surface profile in lieu of spot brush-off blast cleaning. A bristle blaster has also been used to profile the fastener and any damaged areas of the field due to fastener installation.
