For coatings with a high-solids content (95 percent or more), what kinds of defects, such as holidays or micropores, are possible or likely to occur in the applied film? How can these be prevented or remedied?

I agree with Dave; primers and sealers help in a lot of scenarios. On the other hand, time may not allow for a primer/sealer; you can find high solids paints with lower mixed viscosities. The lower viscosity typically allows penetration to seal small pores, while still allowing film builds around 15 mils DFT. It is best to talk with your supplier representative to get an idea of the products that best serve your purposes; it is also a good idea to follow data sheets on these systems to avoid further complications on the jobsite.

You should use a sealer, such as a 100% solids epoxy pre-primer, to avoid pinholes and bubbles. This is a thin-mil product designed to go on about 1 mil thick. Than use your high solids top coat to gain aesthetic or performance characteristics.
