How do you protect concrete against microbiologically influenced corrosion?

There are several methods available. Some are better than others, and they all have pluses and minuses. There are additives to mix into the design that act as penicillin for concrete. Then you have the calcium aluminate mortars, which have a very high pH that does not allow the bacteria to thrive on the substrate.  We also have chemical-resistant barrier coatings, which do not allow the MIC to make contact with the concrete. As always, factors such as erosion, flow rates, cavitation and moisture vapor drive  are all important in selecting the best method of protecting the concrete substrate.
