What is the proper surface preparation for stainless steel before coating to resist a salt-laden atmosphere?

From Warren Brand of Chicago Corrosion Group on June 29, 2015:
My understanding is that salt and stainless steel do not play well, regardless of the grade of SS. I am less concerned about the cleanliness of the surface prep than the profile. Specifying a NACE 1, SP-5 or NACE 2, SP-10, is almost irrelevant due to the clean appearance of stainless anyway. We look for as deep a profile (and dense) as the selected coating will allow, and which will not damage or deform the SS. We have lined a huge amount of stainless steel with excellent results, and the few times we have had issues was when the abrasive blast was poor. (Check out my most recent blog for photos.)

From Tom Schwerdt of Active Transportation Advocates on June 26, 2015:
Specify the proper grade of stainless, correct weld procedures, et cetera so that you will not need a coating.

From William Gusnard of Southern Company Services on June 25, 2015:
Do an SSPC-SP 5 blast with either red ganet or aluminum oxide to avoid cross-contamination of the stainless steel surface, thereby eliminating the potential for a galvanic corrosion cell.
