What is the best way for me to assure I’m getting what I want when I specify a decorative finish such as glazing or gilding?

From Lisa Cicalese McMillen of Cica Lisa Designs on October 28, 2014:
I have samples for my prospective clients and designers to see prior to making any choices. Once a finish is selected, I create a new sample (or samples) based on our color selections so they can see exactly the finish they want in their colors. Until agreement is reached on the full finish, no paint goes on the wall. That being said, no matter how good your sample is, translating from a small sample to a large wall will show some variation from the sample. In most cases, however, this will be slight.

From Lara Marks of Lara Marks Designs, on October 28, 2014:
I always do sample boards for my clients in agreed color and finish so we are all on the same page, and they get exactly what they want.

From Robin Roi of EverGreene Architectural Arts on October 27, 2014:
Consult with a decorative arts studio to advise on materials, methods and terminology; obtain control samples of the material you want and make them available to bidders; make sure the language in specifications corresponds with the sample; and plan on an on-site mockup, pre-construction, whenever possible.
