Short term pain, long term gain! We need to produce our own steel and not be dependent on other (possibly hostile) countries to set the prices for us once they dominate the industry. Labor shortage is bad, but much better than the opposite.

Steve: Perhaps all countries should be independent, producing everything they need within their borders.

In a world where globalization and trade have intertwined the economies of nations, going protectionist will bring short-term chaos, uncertainty and pain; medium-term challenges in trying to build industries to replace the goods and services no longer available from international sources and a long-term return to about the same level of domestic prosperity but minus the international trade opportunities. Donald Trump is building a wall...a trade and diplomatic wall...and I cannot see that as being good for the US in the long term.

Sheldon, that is called an Autarky and those have not historically worked out well.

Comment from Sheldon Wolfe, (8/2/2018, 12:15 PM)

William: I was being facetious; the result would be the loss of sales of US products to other countries. Also, other countries probably see the US as a "possibly hostile country" that sets prices for the industries it dominates.
