The Iron Workers union recently announced the introduction of a paid maternity-leave benefit for its members. Should more employers in the American construction and infrastructure industries follow suit?

Only if all employees are contributing to it like an insurance policy.

Unions represent the workers and those workers decide the benefits. Those Ironworkers will pay a little more in dues and it should work out fine for them.
