According to Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc.’s blog on D+D, there are varying approaches to surface preparation of weathering steel when replacing sealant. Which approach are you most likely to follow?

Remove existing sealant and clean loose patina material from the steel surface using wire brush or light media blasting followed by a solvent wipe to remove loose material before installing a new sealant.
Remove existing sealant and apply protective coating to the steel prior to installing a new sealant.
