A recent jobsite accident in a San Francisco transit tunnel has spurred promises from the San Francisco MTA to better vet general contractors. Should letting agencies investigate bidders' safety records during the contract process?

Yes. Contractors shouldn't simply be trusted to disclose past violations. 85%
No. If a contractor is required to disclose its safety record, that should be enough. If the contractor isn't honest, there will be consequences. 13%

A prime example would be the Georgetown summit accident. Where 5 painters died a terrible death. Any one remember that one ?

You mean that in the US it's not common practice to make contractors (especially on capital projects) disclose their safety records and have 3rd party verification of some sort? Really?!? I'm working on several requests for proposals right now where not only do we need to disclose our safety stats and past violations, but we need to submit copies of our safety certificates and letters from 3rd party agencies / regulators detailing our safety and injury stats to back up what we say. In some cases, we need to be enrolled in 3rd party vetting services who independently review and report on our safety record in order to even put in a bid.
