A Canadian worker’s recent death has been blamed on an allergic reaction to walnut-shell blasting media. Should these products be subject to further safety regulations?

I don't think they should be band or regulated. But I do think there should be signage to warn of the hazards of working with this media. Signage on the product packaging and signage that others in/around the worksite.

I think Adam is on the mark....we don't need additional regulations, just an awareness that these materials can be a hazard and to treat them as such. Things being "green" or "inert" doesn't mean that they are safe...."Green" products can contain allergens and radon gas is inert (though it's decay products are radioactive and not something I want to be around).

When using the product did anyone read the SDS or manufactures instructions, there seems to be some unknowns going on.

I've looked at a few SDS sheets for these products now. Lots of unknowns when it comes to toxicity, some mention about combustible dust, use of an N95 dust mask for nuisance dusts, but no mention of allergic reaction as a potential hazard.

I do know that our SDS sheets we have states this 'Exposure may aggravate those with pre-existing eye, skin, respiratory, or allergic conditions.' However I do agree that there should be something more on the packaging or warning labels/signage on the job site for any non workers who may be on site at any given time and could have a possible allergic reaction.

Folks, an imposed requirement for better safety notifications (signs, SDS allergen notice, etc) is regulation.
