Regardless of the industry, market research is almost as accurate as the predictions of a traveling fortune teller of Eastern European descent. Far too often market research is billed as current and relevant opinion when is really a rehash of previous research under the guise of today's latest marketing buzzwords. Cloud computing is networking functionality that was all the market research rage in the 1970's. Unless your Internet involves directly connecting animals through a resilient, globally distributed information system the "Internet of Things" has been around almost as long as the primary demographic for this website. Electric cars finally happened but they leapfrogged the flying cars market research has harped about as long as Ford has been making cars. Asbestos didn't really work out, which must have been a shock to market research firms in every industry on Earth. Radium water; There was an opportunity nobody but market research firms really got behind. Robot pets. My AIBO tripped my Asimo on the stairs and the resultant fire from the burning intumescent paint in the stairwell forced the evacuation of the entire building and took two months of Hazmat mediation to clean up. What ever happened to modular homes? Do repurposed intermodal containers count? Market research, like weather forecasts, should be labeled "for entertainment purposes only". If you want to see where an industry is going visit a few trade shows every year and see what people are really flocking to. It's almost never a product in some mystic square.
