Recently, President Joe Biden reversed Executive Order 13967 of Dec. 18, 2020, Promoting Beautiful Federal Civic Architecture. Do you believe all federal buildings in Washington, D.C., as well as new federal courthouses and certain other federal buildings should be designed in architectural styles other than “classical” or “traditional?”

I think the term "beautiful civic architecture" leaves a lot to interpretation. Obviously, it would be nice if all federal buildings were designed to be beautiful, but I think that having an Executive Order focusing that much attention on appearance could backfire and result in loss of functionality. I am not saying that having beautiful buildings isn't nice....I have been to Russia and other ex-Soviet states and nothing is uglier than entire blocks of the pure utilitarian square / rectangular buildings that are made out of the exact same brick. However, trying to recreate "classical" or "traditional" looking infrastructure with today's codes, standards, materials and techniques doesn’t always look right either. It often looks temporary and cheap. It can look like Las Vegas, if that makes sense. Just think of Ford Motor Company coming out with the new T-Bird in 2002 that was done in the “Traditional” or “Classical” style of Thunderbirds…..It looked weird when it came out and when you see one today it really looks out of place. To make a short answer long, Yes. I think federal buildings should be designed in architectural styles other than classical or traditional.
