Webinar Dips into Galvanizing Coatings

Navigating the many options for overcoating galvanized steel—for both protective and aesthetic purposes—will be the focus of a free upcoming webinar by SSPC and JPCL.

"Selection of Coatings over Galvanizing," to be held from 11 a.m. to noon ET July 17, will walk participants through the process of selecting coatings for use over galvanized steel.

Participants may register here free.

What You'll Learn

Protective coatings are frequently applied over galvanized surfaces in harsh service environments to provide corrosion protection. Coatings are also used on aging and deteriorating galvanizing to restore corrosion protection to steel no longer fully protected by the sacrificial zinc (galvanized) layer.

This webinar will show participants how to:

  • Determine the service environment for the coating to be applied;
  • Determine the condition of the galvanized steel to be coated;
  • Select an appropriate coating or coating system based on the service environment and the steel's condition; and
  • Refer to ASTM D6386, Standard for Preparation of Zinc (Hot Dip Galvanized) Coated Iron and Steel Product and Hardware Surfaces for Painting for guidance regarding preparation of galvanized substrates before coating.

Among the recent presentations:

Chlor*Rid International

"New Methods for Testing and Extraction of Soluble Salts," offered June 19, assisted participants in selecting specific procedures for retrieving soluble salts from a surface and methods to analyze the concentration of the salts.

Coatings webinars

"Advances in Plural-Component Equipment Technology," presented May 1, covered advances in plural-component equipment technology and provided contractors with information on how to select the proper equipment for their protective coatings projects.

Carboline offshore

"Achieving Passive Fire Protection Offshore," presented April 17, outlined the fire test standards, environmental exposures and physical property testing that must be met when using passive fireproofing coating systems. The presentation covered the benefits and applications of industrial epoxy intumescent fireproofing materials and reviewed keys to success when installing these systems.

Harsco abrasives project

"Safety in Abrasive Blasting," presented March 27, details the potential respiratory hazards that can occur from abrasive blasting and how to prevent them. Presenter William J. Mills III, Ph.D., M.Sc., CIH, C. Chem., reviews personal protective equipment, standards and exposures, respirator selection, and more.

NLB Waterjetting
