20 Towns Win Main Street Makeovers

From Joplin, MO to Hilo, HI, 20 communities in Canada and the U.S. have been selected to receive a revitalization package.

The makeover includes exterior painting of downtown businesses along a two- to three-block stretch in each location.

The communities, Benjamin Moore’s 2013 Main Street Matters winners, were selected by nearly half a million votes and an “incredible outpouring of stories, viral videos and passionate pleas” on paintwhatmatters.com, paintwhatmatters.ca and social media sites, according to the Montvale, NJ-based paint maker.

Benjamin Moore announced the winners Monday (July 8).

Community Campaigns

Throughout the six-week voting period that concluded June 30, more than 130 communities rallied on the websites to generate excitement and votes in hopes of garnering a 2013 selection, the company said.

Officials, citizens and business owners used YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest to encourage votes.

For example, a graphic designer from Texarkana created 10 memes and posted them to Facebook to encourage people to vote for Texarkana. The memes were also made into posters and displayed throughout the town.

Citizens and businesses engaged in many efforts to generate votes for their towns, including this meme created by JiLs Graphic Design in Texarkana.

Meanwhile, Ellicott City, MD, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, made comedic YouTube videos to appeal to voters.

“The incredible response is a testament to how strongly people feel for their community and we hope this movement continues to drive support for local businesses as every Main Street has a story,” said David Melancon, chief marketing pfficer of Benjamin Moore & Co.
