How-to Helps Measure Surface Profile

A hands-on guide to accurately measuring surface profile depth is the latest in an original series of video tutorials presented by KTA-Tator Inc. and produced by PaintSquare.

Narrated by KTA-Tator president Kenneth A. Trimber, How to Measure Surface Profile Depth (5:07) shows the viewer how to use Testex Press-O-Film Replica Tape and a spring micrometer to gain an accurate determination of a surface profile before beginning a coating project.

How to Measure Surface Profile Depth demonstrates use of Testex Press-O-Film Replica Tape and a spring micrometer before beginning a coating project.

The title is the newest addition to Coating Inspection Instruments: A PaintSquare Video Education Series, available exclusively through PaintSquare.com.

The series is co-produced by KTA-Tator and PaintSquare and will be rolled out throughout the rest of this year.

Surface Profile How-to

Determining whether a surface profile is "rough enough or too rough" is important to the quality of the coating job that follows, Trimber notes. The tape itself also creates a permanent record of the profile achieved.

The tape used in the demonstration complies with Method C of ASTM D4417, Standard Test Methods for Field Measurement of Surface Profile of Blast Cleaned Steel.

Trimber discusses the three types of tape available (coarse, extra coarse and extra coarse plus) and when to use which one (or two) for various applications.

Tesstex Press-O-Film Replica Tape

The tape in the demonstration complies with Method C of ASTM D4417, Standard Test Methods for Field Measurement of Surface Profile of Blast Cleaned Steel.

The tape is used to create a reverse replica of the surface profile, which is then measured with the spring micrometer. Trimber explains how to apply the tape, obtain the profile, and measure the result with the micrometer.
