Tank Lining Boasts 1-Coat Extended Life

A new coating for high-temperature tank applications that is also high pressure-resistant is designed to meet the increasing needs of the oil and gas industry, The Sherwin-Williams Company says.

Nova-Plate 325 is an extended-lifecycle, single-coat, 100 percent solids tank lining for high-temperature crude oil, produced water and frac tank applications.

Sherwin-Williams' Nova-Plate 325 tank lining is suitable for onshore and offshore applications and can dry enough for foot traffic in six hours, the company said.

The coating can also be used for universal "swing service" applications in refined fuel and ethanol service, the company said.

High Temps, Quick Dry

Nova-Plate 325 was designed for both onshore and offshore applications where conventional systems cannot withstand contents that have been extracted under pressure. According to Sherwin-Williams, the coating can be used at temperatures as high as 300°F for crude oil and 210°F for produced water.

The coating offers a fast return to service, drying enough for foot traffic in six hours and cure to service in 48 hours, the company said. Dry times are based on a typical 20 mil DFT application at 77°F. In rehabilitation applications, Sherwin-Williams said Nova-Plate 325 can be applied in a single coat of up to 60 mils DFT.

"Our labs are working directly with the oil and gas industry to meet their ever-increasing needs," said Ron Knecht, market director for Oil & Gas-North America.

"A lining specification for heavy crude oil must take today's high temperatures and pressures into account. Nova-Plate 325 is formulated with advanced novolac technology, incorporating components of glass and ceramic, that promotes a tank's long life under the most demanding of immersion conditions," said Knecht.
