New Organic Paint Makes Quiet Splash
A New Hampshire mother-daughter team has launched a line of nontoxic paints for baby nurseries, classrooms and other rooms used by children.
The "Quiet Nursery Collection" is from Portsmouth-based Quiet Home Paints, a new company that advertises "entirely nontoxic" organic paints made without VOCs, pesticides or herbicides.
House Painter Turns Manufacturer
Company president Lisa Teague says her work as a house painter showed her the hazards of working with toxic materials.
"Children breathe twice as fast as adults, making them especially susceptible to airborne toxins," Teague said in a product announcement. "Our mission was to create a line of paints where safety, quality and beauty are of equal importance, while eliminating color choice anxiety by producing simple, beautiful palettes."
The child-focused Nursery Collection "was conceived for safe, cohesive design choices," the company says. "Four distinct palettes—Sleep, Wake, Play and Pop—evoke strong emotional reactions and make color choice easy and fun."
Teague, who also calls herself a designer and artist/color expert, says she was not satisfied with the health and design options offered by other wall paints. She founded Quiet Home Paints with her daughter Andi.
Nontoxic Formulation
"There are a number of toxins that are not classified as VOCs—and, therefore, can still be included in paint—such as heavy metals and formaldehyde," the company says. "QHP believes that these and other toxins just don’t belong in spaces where children spend their time (or frankly, any of us)."

The VOC-free Quiet Nursery Collection has no solvents, animal products, heavy metals, formaldehyde, vinyl chloride, phthalates, APEO or acrylic softeners, the company says.
Quiet Home also makes chalkboard paints, which have the same palette and the same non-toxicity as the regular paints.
Quiet Nursery is packaged in recycled/recyclable one-gallon cans and quarts made from all recycled materials such as old car tires, which gives them their signature black color. The company uses only recycled/recyclable cardboard boxes for shipping.
