THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013

Bids to clean and paint almost 10 million pounds of steel on a Louisiana bridge will be accepted until April 24, transportation officials announced.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is requesting bids to clean and paint structural steel on the Atchafalaya Bridge.

Constructed in 1971, the 3,956-foot cantilevered Warren through truss bridge is located on Route 1 in the town of Simmesport in Avoyelles and Pointe Coupee Parishes.

The state transportation agency has allotted $5 million to $7.5 million to clean and paint a total of approximately 9,897,315 pounds of steel on the bridge's main span and approaches.

Coating Systems and Requirements

The steel will be pressure washed at 5,000 psi; vacuum-shroud power tool-cleaned to a Bare Metal finish (SSPC-SP 11) to remove pack rust; spot-primed; and overcoated with a system from List 79 from the LA DOTD QPL.

List 79 is comprised of the following systems:

  • A three-coat alkyd system with an epoxy penetrating sealer primer, an epoxy mastic intermediate and a waterborne acrylic finish;
  • An epoxy penetrating sealer primer, an epoxy mastic intermediate and a urethane finish;
  • A two-coat elastomeric acrylic system; and
  • A two-coat moisture-cured urethane system.

The existing coatings contain lead and chromium; containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 and waste disposal according to SSPC-Guide 7 are required. SSPC-QP 1, QP 2 and QP 3 certifications are also required.

The contractor shall also employ a NACE-certified inspector to perform coatings inspection services.

Upcoming Bridge Projects

This job is one of three multimillion-dollar bridge painting projects the LA DOTD plans to advertise this year. Two additional high-dollar-value contracts are set to bid in June.

A contract for the second phase of painting on the Huey Long Bridge, a 5,879-foot continuous steel truss through deck bridge over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, is set to be advertised for June 12 letting and has a price tag of $15 million to $20 million.
