WSDOT Announces Bridge Coating Project
Washington State is seeking proposals for cleaning and recoating the Nisqually River Bridges—a contract estimated at $5 million to $7.5 million.
Bids will be opened March 20 for the project, which involves cleaning and coating about 160,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces on the northbound and southbound through truss bridges over the Nisqually River.
The northbound structure, 446 feet long and 43 feet wide, was built in 1937 and rehabilitated in 1982. The southbound structure, 430 feet long and 48 feet wide, was built 30 years after the north span.
The bridges are located on Interstate 5 at the border of Pierce and Thurston counties, which is formed by the Nisqually River.
Scope of Work
Surface preparation for structural steel surfaces above the roadway includes abrasive blast-cleaning, spot-power tool-cleaning and waterjet-cleaning.
Top flat surfaces of the portal, including top lateral and overhead sway members, will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6). Additional steel will be spot-power tool-cleaned to Bare Metal (SP 11) or waterjet-cleaned at 5,000 psi with a zero-degree rotating tip at a 4-inch maximum standoff distance (SP 12).
The cost of the contract is estimated between $5 million and $7.5 million.
About 8,300 linear feet of steel will be coated with a high ratio co-polymerized calcium sulfonate penetrating sealant to treat pack rust. The superstructure will be overcoated with a high ratio polymerized calcium sulfonate alkyd self-priming topcoat.
Steel below the roadway will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near-White finish (SP 10) and recoated with a moisture-cured urethane system.
Containment will be required to capture the existing lead-based coatings and spent abrasives during surface preparation. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required.
WSDOT personnel will perform coatings inspection services.
