Maine's Joshua L. Chamberlain Bridge, named for the state's famous Civil War son, will be getting a $2.1 million facelift from Olympus Painting Contractors Inc., of Tarpon Springs, FL.
The Maine Department of Transportation recently awarded a $2,147,353.50 contract to Olympus to clean and paint steel on the two-lane bridge that connects Bangor and Brewer over the Penobscot River.
Design and inspection costs will bring the total price of the project to about $3 million, MDOT project manager Doug Coombs told the Bangor Daily News.
Scope of Work
The project involves cleaning and recoating about 1,140 tons of structural steel on the steel plate girder bridge on Route 1A, which also crosses a railroad, waterfront trails, streets and parking lots.

The project includes coating bridge railing, including 1,911 linear feet of approach railing.
The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10), tested for soluble salt with chloride remediation as needed, and recoated with a three-coat organic zinc-epoxy-urethane system selected from NEPCOAT List B.
The project also includes a variety of steel repairs, including replacing 340 linear feet of railing with new galvanized and painted rail.
Class 1A containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required to encapsulate the existing lead-based coatings. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required.
A NACE or SSPC-certified inspector will be required to perform coatings inspection services.
The project is expected to begin in March and end in November.
Son of Brewer
Chamberlain was a Brewer native and college professor who joined the Union Army during the Civil War. Despite his lack of military experience, he became a highly respected and decorated officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general.
He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his leadership in the Battle of Gettysburg and was given the honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony of Robert E. Lee’s Army at Appomattox Courthouse.

Chamberlain studied at Bowdoin College, where he later became a faculty member and president after the war. During his studies, he spoke freely of his beliefs urging fellow students to follow their hearts in regards to the Civil War. He also was later elected governor of Maine.
The Chamberlain Bridge was opened to traffic in November 1954 and was called “the new bridge” until the downstream I-395 bridge opened in November 1986.
