Blast QC Opens Video Learning Series

A how-to guide to determining blast cleanliness opens an original 30-part series of video tutorials presented by KTA-Tator Inc. and produced by PaintSquare.

Narrated by KTA-Tator president Kenneth A. Trimber, How to Determine Blast Cleanliness walks the viewer through the use of the SSPC VIS-1 Surface Cleanliness Guide, to determine the estimated level of surface cleanliness before and after cleaning a substrate.

The video is the opening title in Coating Inspection Instruments: A PaintSquare Video Education Series, which will be available exclusively through PaintSquare.com.

The series is co-produced by KTA-Tator and PaintSquare and will be rolled out throughout the rest of this year.

Coating Inspection Instruments

Viewers will learn how to work with a variety of coating inspection instruments to achieve the best results. Future installments will include the use of:

  • DeFelsko Positector 200, SPG, UTG and 6000 probes;
  • Fischer Dualscope FMP100;
  • PATTI adhesion testers for steel and concrete;
  • Thermometers;
  • Tooke Gages;
  • SSPC-VIS 2 and SSPC-VIS 3;
  • Adhesion testing;
  • Moisure meters; and
  • Rilem Tubes.

The entire series will be hosted by Trimber, who has been with KTA since 1968 and has more than 40 years of experience in the industrial painting field. He is a past president of SSPC and chairman of its Commercial Coatings Committee.

Trimber is an SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Specialist, an SSPC C-3 Supervisor/Competent Person for the Deleading of Industrial Structures, and a NACE-Certified Coatings Inspector Level 3 (Peer Review).

Determining Blast Cleanliness

In the first four-minute video, Trimber explains each of the guide's many reference photographs and how to use them to evaluate actual blast-cleaning results.

SSPC VIS-1 Surface Cleanliness Guide will help users assess cleanliness but must be used with the specification "to determine ultimate compliance," says Trimber.

For example, Trimber notes that there are four rust grades for bare, previously unpainted steel and that each grade carries a variety of potential cleaning results, depending on the SSPC SP standard specified for the project. Similar guidance is offered for other substrate conditions.

Trimber also discusses the effects of using different abrasives and the influence of profile depth on cleaning results.

He even notes the guide's limitations resulting from photo quality, lighting, viewing angle and other factors.

"The standard gives you a lot of opportunity to evaluate the surface cleanliness, but it's important to recognize that it's a guide, it gets you in the ballpark," says Trimber. "You really must apply with the written word the specification to determine ultimate compliance."
