AkzoNobel Names N. America Director

AkzoNobel has appointed Research, Development, and Innovation chief Graeme Armstrong to oversee its North American operations.

Armstrong will become Managing Director of Surface Chemistry and Country Director for North America, following the retirement of Bob Margevich, the company announced Jan. 23.

Armstrong is currently Executive Committee member responsible for Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) at the Dutch-based paint, coatings and specialty chemical maker.

Armstrong will assume his new responsibilities on April 1 and will work alongside Margevich for two months to ensure a smooth transition, AkzoNobel said. Armstrong will continue his RD&I responsibilities until a successor is announced.

Experience, Education

Armstrong, 50, joined AkzoNobel in 2008 after the acquisition of ICI, where he had led the company's RD&I function. Before joining ICI, Armstrong spent 19 years in the detergents industry for Unilever and JohnsonDiversey.

He graduated from the University of Newcastle in the UK, where he obtained a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.

He is a Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of its Science Policy Board. He is also Chairman of Chemistry Innovation PLC and a former non-executive Director of the UK government Technology Strategy Board.
