DOL Offers $35M in Infrastructure Job Grants

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2024

In the second round of funding of the Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs program, the U.S. Department of Labor has unveiled almost $35 million to prepare workers for infrastructure jobs.

These grants will reportedly enable public-private partnerships to develop, implement and scale worker-centered programs that train people in manufacturing, information technology and professional, scientific and technical service occupations.

About the Program

First announced in April last year, the Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs Grant program was opened to applicants to develop or scale strategies that provide the training and supportive services needed to build a talent pipeline for career pathways in infrastructure-related industries

Additionally, there is emphasis on programs serving people from rural or historically marginalized, underserved, and underrepresented communities. The funding will also reportedly support programs that align with the department’s Good Jobs Initiative and embed diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility into the project design.

The grant program reportedly enables partners in the public and private sectors to develop or scale workforce training programs to prepare job seekers in advanced manufacturing; information technology; and professional, scientific, and technical service occupations that support renewable energy, transportation, and broadband infrastructure sectors.

These include occupations in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors; broadband and transmission expansion; advanced manufacturing, including biomanufacturing; and electrical, industrial, and civil engineers and technicians who facilitate the design, construction, modernization, and maintenance of the nation’s infrastructure.

According to the DOL’s release at the time, the department intends to make a total of approximately $200 million available for the Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs Grant program over multiple competitive rounds of funding, pending availability of funds.

The second round of funding requires applicants to choose one of the following tracks

  • Development track: Establishes local and regional partnerships to implement new sector-based training programs in infrastructure-related sectors; and
  • Scaling track: Expands an existing local or regional training partnership model with success in a specific infrastructure-related sector to the state or national level.

The department notes that successful lead applicants from round one may not apply as lead applicants for round two. However, they are eligible to apply as partners in this round.

“The Biden-Harris administration’s historic investments in clean energy and infrastructure projects are creating hundreds of thousands of good jobs across the country,” said Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training José Javier Rodríguez.
