Chemical Company Opens Facility in Spain

MONDAY, MAY 13, 2024

Last month, chemical supplier Wanhua Chemical Group officially opened its Barcelona research and development center in Cornella de Llobregat, Spain, to strengthen company efforts for collaborative scientific research.

The new facility will reportedly offer technical consultations on several topics, including product performance, application methods and raw material selection, responding to the requirements set by its downstream customers.

“At Wanhua Chemical, we've always prioritized technological innovation as our core competency. The opening of Barcelona R&D center symbolizes our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality products and meeting customer needs,” said Dr. Hua, Executive Vice President of Wanhua Chemical.

“We aspire to engage with the industry in a spirit of openness, collaborating to drive innovation and lead the way in sustainable development.”

According to Wanhua, the new center will create solutions to address the needs of customers, develop and validate new products, provide technical support for quality concerns and keep up with technological advancements in the industry.

The new research facility reportedly will also help Wanhua showcase its ongoing research and development directions, including green chemistry technology studies, renewable energy utilization, circular economy and waste utilization, and sustainable product development.

The center is expected to help with engaging in international cooperation and standard-setting initiatives. As a start to this objective, Wanhua has already built connections with local research forces, including the University of Barcelona, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the Autonomous University of Catalonia, the Catalonia Institute of Chemical Research and the Spanish Standardization.

Additionally, Wanhua has plans to use joint project research acceleration, talent cultivation exchange and technology transfer facilitation to help provide technical support and services for fine chemicals and materials.

Barcelona is reportedly Wanhua's second R&D center in Europe, as its Gödöllo R&D Center in Hungary focuses on the polyurethane industry. The new Barcelona center will instead focus more on business collaborations within the fine chemicals and materials industries.

The new center will work with coatings, adhesives and engineering plastics, as well as with local entities on renewable energy, carbon capture and recycling, biosynthesis, and bio-based materials.

The company believes that the facility’s proximity to Western Europe and the Mediterranean will help to enhance support for these regions and aid development efforts in North Africa and Latin America.
